Why Are Healthy Family Relationships Important?

Our wellbeing is directly affected by the relationships we have with the people around us. Positive relationships build trust and give support. Being around people who are able to discuss both difficult and happy times can help us cope with anxiety.

Children are taught the most about their relationships through their family members. They provide them with an example from which they start to discover the ways to strengthen relationships throughout their lives. Children who are taught healthy relationships from their parents will be better adept at building relationships with their peers and adults. When children learn the skills of creating positive relationships and build positive relationships, they are able to practice these skills over and over again as they meet new people. For example, when parents say "thank you" to children when they assist them, children are more likely be more likely to "thank you" when their peers or other adults help them.
